Mana Taonga: Tradition and Innovation in Maori Art

Description

This course examines Māori art from points of arrival c.800 to the present day. Students will be exposed to both marae and gallery arts, with classes ranging from personal adornment, moko, weaving and carving to figurative painting and contemporary art. The impact of gender, patronage, globalisation, repatriation and new technologies are discussed. Artists discussed include Raharuhi Rukupo, Rangimarie Hetet, Ralph Hotere, Lisa Reihana and Merata Mita. Site visits to Auckland Museum and Tāne-Nui-a-Rangi, the University's meeting house, are intended. This course is taught concurrently with ARTHIST 338.
