Images of Asia


Description

An introduction to the history of the idea of "Asia", and to the complex processes of state and national identity formation in East and Southeast Asia in the 19th and 20th centuries. We look at broad themes relating to religion, gender, imperialism, nationalism, globalism and popular culture focusing on China, Korea, Japan and Indonesia. Numerous lecturers bring their expertise to this course, which is required for all students majoring in the School of Asian Studies.
