CRIM 204
Critical Studies in Policing
Description
"Critical Studies in Policing" provides opportunities for students to explore policing in New Zealand and beyond. Throughout the course students will develop an understanding of the concepts of "the police" as an organisation and the role of "policing"; address the key issues challenging contemporary police and policing; increase their awareness of inequality within and outside the police service; and explore case studies and examples of local, international, formal and informal policing.
Students will critically examine media representations of the police; police culture, power and accountability; the effects of human rights claims on policing methods; and emerging threats to policing both locally and globally. They will relate their newly formed expertise to current issues and debates within criminology.
Classes will encompass a mixture of traditional lecture material and interactive workshop activities. Students will have the choice of an essay or blog as their first assessment, followed by an in-class test and an exam.
