Explores the figure of the witch in the most important period and location in the history of witchcraft - early modern Europe. Examines the factors that initiated and drove the witch-hunts; why belief in magic and witchcraft proved such a powerful and enduring force in European society; why and how so many myths have arisen about witchcraft in this period.
