Making Modern Spain 1840-1939

Description

The course offers an overview of the cultural politics pertaining to modern Spain, from the late Nineteenth Century through to the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939. We focus on the intersecting strands of gender, class and nation, especially in relation to war: the War of Independence (1808-1813), the Spanish-Moroccan  War and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Issues addressed are citizenship, education, working-class movements and sociopolitical margins, empire, liberal constructions of the nation, nationalisms and the rise of Spanish fascism.
