French 378 Study Abroad

The French Department encourages students to study overseas. We offer a variety of study abroad programmes for students at both undergraduate (FRENCH 277, FRENCH 278, FRENCH 377, FRENCH 378) and postgraduate (FRENCH 777, FRENCH 778) levels.

General information and guidelines

1. Eligibility

To be eligible for FRENCH 378 students must have a minimum B grade in FRENCH 304 or any Stage III non-language course taught and assessed in French.

2. Study Abroad Adviser approval / documentation to be supplied on application

Your proposed course must be approved, by the Study Abroad Adviser prior to your enrolment and departure. It is therefore essential that you contact the Study Abroad Adviser well in advance, provide documentation, obtain approval and complete the Study Abroad Application Form.

Documentation:

  1. Up to date course details (including course planner and assessment details, textbook references and/or course materials, total contact hours and course duration): the proposed overseas course must satisfy partial requirements of DELF B2+ level or equivalent, and be approved by the Study Abroad Adviser prior to enrolment and departure (credit will not be given to courses other than that approved by the Study Abroad Adviser).
  2. An up to date copy of your Academic Transcript.

3. Duration of course

A minimum of sixty hours of classes is required for credit. The number of weeks that the course runs may vary from institution to institution but is usually around three to four weeks. Proof of the course duration must be supplied (see above).

4. DELF-DALF exam for French students

If the institution offers this possibility, you are strongly advised to prepare and sit DELF B2+ or equivalent at the conclusion of the course.

5. Documentation to be supplied on return

  1. Proof of attendance.
  2. Course materials used.
  3. All marked assignments and tests.
  4. Official end of course certificate from the host institution with a minimum overall grade of 15/20 in DELF B2 level.
  5. Essay in French.
  6. Recommendation in English.

6. Essay in French

Together with the dossier of course work completed overseas, students must submit a written assignment (900-1,000 words), in French, outlining their study and life experience overseas (or on a topic agreed in advance with the Study Abroad Adviser). This work will be assessed (on the basis of content and linguistic quality) as part of the final grade.

7. Recommendation in English

Returning students are requested to provide a recommendation in English for the French Study Abroad folder. Please note that this report will not be a confidential document as it is intended to act as a guide to future students in their choice of courses.

Please comment on such matters as:

  • The overall quality of the course.
  • The appropriateness of the level.
  • The quality of the teaching.
  • The usefulness and interest value of the course materials.
  • Other relevant aspects eg, organised excursions.

8. Eligibility to undertake two study abroad courses

Please see the Study Abroad Adviser. In all cases students will be required to sit and pass the appropriate level of DELF/DALF in addition to other course requirements.

9. Choosing a school

Before you contact the Study Abroad Adviser please consult the French Study Abroad home page. You might also like to view the French Study Abroad folder in the European Languages and Literatures Reception Office, Level 7, Arts 1 Bldg, 14a Symonds Street and the list of suitable overseas institutions available at www.qualitefle.fr

This will give you a good idea of the most suitable institution for you, which can then be discussed with the Study Abroad Adviser. As a general rule, any school that offers the DELF-DALF should provide a high standard of tuition.

StudyLink

If you will be applying for either Student Allowance or Student Loan Living Costs funding while you are overseas, you will need to complete the Overseas Study Application Form(from StudyLink) with the actual dates of your overseas study and have it signed by the Study Abroad Adviser. (Note: On the form, each 15 point study abroad course equals 0.125 EFTS.) You will then need to give this form directly to StudyLink for processing. This form should be completed as soon as you receive approval to enrol in the Study Abroad course: The sooner you apply, the more likely you will have time to sort out any problems before you leave. You will still need to make sure you fulfill StudyLink's eligibility requirements. Failure to do this correctly may result in your payments stopping while you are overseas.

If you have general questions, please check first with AskAuckland. If you have queries about the StudyLink applications, eligibility or problems, check with StudyLinkor email Fees Team (fees@auckland.ac.nz).
