PHIL 234
Chinese Philosophy
Description
This course introduces the major ideas of the Chinese philosophical tradition by means of reading and discussion of canonical texts such at the Analects of Confucius, The Daodejing, Mozi, Mencius Zhuangzi, Xunzi and Hanfeizi. Other texts may be considered as time permits. No familiarly with this literature will be assumed and texts will be available in translation. Students will acquire philosophical ideas from this tradition and we learn how to approach texts in a philosophically comparative way by becoming aware of both the philosophical context of the production of these texts and the assumptions and biases will bring to their interpretation.
