Coming of the Māori: Archaeology of Aotearoa (New Zealand)

Description

This course examines the first 600-700 years of human settlement in Aotearoa New Zealand from an archaeological perspective, from Polynesian arrival through the early western contact period. Course themes include Māori origins in East Polynesia, how tropical settlers adapted to Aotearoa's temperate environments, changes in resource use over time, development of Māori material culture and arts, the appearance of fortified sites (pā), and the emergence of “classic” Māori society.
