Politics of Culture

Please note: this is archived course information from 2021 for ANTHRO 244.

Description

This course is an introduction to political anthropology and a consideration of anthropology’s contribution to understanding issues such as power, conflict, the state and cultural politics. It offers a lens for looking at both the world of politics, and the politics of our worlds.

We explore diverse examples of cultural politics in society, potentially including representation, appropriation, nationalism and indigenous issues. Looking at the politics of culture provides a critical window for understanding many of the political tensions and debates today.
