ASIAN 701 A & B

East Asia: Civilisation, Tradition and Globalisation

Please note: this is archived course information from 2018 for ASIAN 701.

Description

This is a core course for Asian Studies postgraduate degrees: 240 points MA, BA(Hons) and PGDipArts.

It introduces students to an interdisciplinary study of East Asia through different approaches, and aims to equip students with critical analytical skills for area studies, with particular reference to East Asia. It is designed to give students an opportunity to consider East Asia as a historically, culturally and politically connected region. It aims to encourage students to develop appreciation of issues concerning regions and cultures beyond their immediate research interests.

Throughout the year we will have a number of guest lecturers who will present their own research and discuss their work with students. By engaging with a range of researchers and their recent/current work students will familiarise themselves with the process and craft of research and gain insight into different approaches and methodologies.

In most weeks students will present weekly readings and lead seminars, where they can practice presentation skills and critical engagement with literature. We will also dedicate some time to formulating individual research questions and designing research. Students will have an opportunity to present work-in-progress and to get some feedback from the others in class. Thus this course will support the major research students are undertaking outside this course such as BA(Hons) dissertations and MA proposals.

To complete this course students must enrol in ASIAN 701 A and B.
