Classical Mythology through Tragedy

Description

This course studies the mythology of ancient Greece and Rome and its use in tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. A strong emphasis will be the way a study of myth helps to develop an understanding of the values of the society that produced it. All texts will be studied in English translation.

Reading/Texts

The prescribed texts are collected into a Course Reader, available from Classics and Ancient History (approximately $25, cash only). Students will be advised in the first lecture on where and when to purchase this.

Additional readings  in electronic format will be recommended as they become relevant.

Assessment

Coursework 40%, final examination 60%. The coursework involves one very short assignment for 15% that is designed to lead into the essay for 25%.
