Description

So you wanna write, right? Or maybe write right? This course will definitely help you write better! This course offers you a smorgasbord of five creative writing genres with the view that different forms of writing are instructive for all writing practice. We will cover poetry, multimedia, creative non-fiction, short fiction and drama. Classes are based on three activities: exploration, examination and expression. To this end, in our 2 hour lecture we will examine a genre, discuss various techniques and approaches, read and/or watch a stimulating piece on the genre and respond to learnings with an exercise to be further developed both in your own time and in the peer reviewed environment offered in tutorials.

Students will maintain a Writer's Workbook and Portfolio (WWP) containing all creative writing related material (drafts, exercises, ideas, inspirational media). The Portfolio section comprises of 5 formal pieces of genre-specific writing. Assessment is based on the WWP and tutorial participation. While ideal for students who wish to pursue creative writing at Stage 3 and Masters level (the WWP is included in eligibility criteria), this course will enrich anyone interested in creative writing.
