EUROPEAN 207
European Drama: Greatest Hits
Please note: this is archived course information from 2021 for EUROPEAN 207.
Description
This course, taught by specialists in Drama, English and European Languages and Literature, presents a rich and varied survey of European drama through the study of landmark plays that illustrate the development of dramatic and theatrical conventions in European drama.
A recurring theme is how dramatic form and performance reflect cultural and social context. Dramatic forms and playwrights featured in the course range from a seventeenth-century court masque by Ben Jonson and French classical theatre to Goethe, Ibsen, Chekhov, Lorca, Pirandello, Beckett and Handke.
The assessment option of a scene presentation provides students with the opportunity to explore considerations related to performance and to bring the works studied to life.
