Popular Music on Screen

Description

Explores the intersections and interfaces of popular music with visual media, including photography and graphic design, film and television, video, the web and mobile digital media. The course examines audiovisual forms such as documentaries, music shows on television, the uses of songs, music video, dancing, the musical, the biopic and representations of music technologies. We consider the aesthetics, affects and discourses (iie, the sound, look, feel and meanings) of specific music styles. The production, circulation and consumption of visual music are situated in historical contexts and debates about popular culture.

Films viewed and discussed in the course have included: Shut Up and Sing (directed by Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck, 2007); A Hard Day's Night (Richard Lester, 1964); Jackie Brown (Quentin Tarantino, 2002); Save the Last Dance (Thomas Carter, 2001); Tango (Carlos Saura, 1999); Luck By Chance (Zoya Akhtar, 2009); Dancer in the Dark (Lars Von Trier, 2000); I'm Not There (Todd Haynes, 2008); Morvern Callar (Lynn Ramsay, 2003).
