Please note: this is archived course information from 2019 for GERMAN 320.

Description

This course will examine three key literary works against the backdrop of major cultural, social and political shifts in Germany during the 20th century. Two World Wars, the Weimar Republic, a divided and reunited Germany will be a special focus of the texts examined in this course. The first text examines masculine anxieties at the turn of the century, the second text, from a female perspective, explores the interwar years in Germany (Weimar Republic). Finally, the third text recalls the classical Greek myth of Cassandra and uses it as a commentary on censorship and marginalization in the GDR.
