HISTORY 737 A & B
Rethinking History
Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for HISTORY 737.
Description
An examination of contemporary trends and theoretical issues in history writing. The course explores key debates in the theory and practice of history, particularly those arising from what has been termed "history as text and discourse". Students will examine how historians define their field and its challenges; how they think about historical sources; and how they choose among an array of approaches to the past. Topics range from the linguistic and narrative turns to the interdisciplinary study of material and visual culture. The overall goal of the course is to provide students with a self-reflexive approach to the past and an understanding of the many ways that historians represent it.
To complete this course students must enrol in HISTORY 737 A and B.
