Rethinking History

Please note: this is archived course information from 2021 for HISTORY 737.

Description

This course offers an intensive introduction to key issues in the theory and practice of history.  It exposes you to different ways of conceiving the historical enterprise and prompts you to consider what sort of history you might practice.  History 737 focuses on the controversies and consequences of the so-called “poststructuralist (or linguistic) turn” of the 1980s, as well as more recent challenges presented by the digital revolution and populist questioning of academic authority.  The aim is to illuminate how and why scholars over the past three decades decades have engaged in a “rethinking” of the historical enterprise and charted new directions in the practice of history.

To complete this course students must enrol in HISTORY 737 A and B.
