Modern Italian Fiction and Drama

Description

This course is taught in Italian.

The course presents historical developments, artistic movements, main writers and significant short stories, novels and plays of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It considers the structures, topics and influence of these works and the ways in which they refer to historical, social and political issues as well as to literary and theatrical conventions.

The course (taught in Italian) offers the following topics:

• Italy between the two world wars (Futurism and Pirandello)
• The impact of Fascism, the racial laws and the war (Giorgio Bassani and Primo Levi)
• The country’s reconstruction after the war and the economic miracle (Eduardo de Filippo)
• The 1970s: feminism and terrorism (Dario Fo and Franca Rame)
• The new millennium: recent developments in Italian theatre (narrative theatre) and fiction (Italophone writers)
