ITALIAN 335
Engendered Voices (Texts in Italian)
Please note: this is archived course information from 2018 for ITALIAN 335.
Description
In the past decades Italian women writers and filmmakers have achieved wide recognition in Italy. Women writers have been the recipients of all the prestigious literary prizes and their works have been translated into various languages. At the same time many Italian writers are excluded from the official canon, and the distribution of films by Italian women filmmakers is poor.
From pre-feminism to post-modernism, from the search for a lost mother to the search for oneself, this course focuses on the representation and invention of women’s experiences, on women’s social and political conditions, and on issues of gender and culture in modern and contemporary Italy.
This third-year course is designed for students advancing in Italian: all primary texts will be read in Italian.
