Description

This course provides an overview of the major developments in contemporary Italian theatre, from the innovations of the Futurists, the "grottesco" and Pirandello at the beginning of the twentieth century to the provocations of feminist playwrights and narrative theatre in the last few years. Authors discussed include Luigi Chiarelli, Luigi Pirandello, Anna Bonacci, Eduardo de Filippo, Natalia Ginzburg, Dario Fo and Franca Rame, and Marco Paolini. A close reading of representative plays is accompanied by the discussion of the taped staging of some of them. The course is taught in Italian, seminar style.
