Contemporary Italian Theatre

Description

This course provides an overview of the major developments in contemporary Italian theatre, from the innovations of the Futurists, the "grottesco", and Pirandello at the beginning of the Twentieth Century to the provocations of feminist playwrights and narrative theatre in the last few years. Students will engage in close reading of representative plays and discuss their taped staging.

The class has a two-hour lecture and a tutorial, plus extra meetings every second week.

Regular attendance, reading of the prescribed primary and secondary texts, and contribution to the tutorials are expected.
