Description

Aim: To develop an analytical ability as a linguist to examine and explain linguistic phenomena in Japanese, within a limited scope.

In this course, you will:

  • Read and discuss linguistic articles in English concerning aspects of the Japanese language, including topics such as topicalisation, subjectivity-increasing features, semantic verb classification and particles, degree of transitivity and particle choice, passives, benefactive constructions, three-way deictic system, ellipsis and honorific system in Japanese
  • Consult primary data to collect target examples, analyse them and discuss findings in oral and written reports, while linking the discussion to the literature
  • Discern morpheme boundaries and provide glosses for Japanese sentences for a linguistic article
