Imagining Japan


Description

The emergence of Japanese cultural and national consciousness and its renegotiation over time, with reference to origins, identity and otherness. Particular attention will be paid to the interaction between Japan and other cultures and the ways in which these encounters shaped Japanese identity. Themes include the emergence of "Japan", cross-cultural encounters, modernity and nationalism in both dominant and popular discourses. No knowledge of Japanese required. To complete this course students must enrol in JAPANESE 731 A and B.
