LANGTCHG 202
Introductory English Language Analysis for Teachers
Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for LANGTCHG 202.
Description
This course provides an overview or description of the English language. It is divided into three main sections: 1. the grammar of the language, 2. the lexicon or vocabulary of the language, and 3. the sounds that make up the language. The course aims to help students understand the patterns in each of these aspects of the language and how they function as a system. It is designed primarily for (intending) language teachers; course content tends to focus therefore on the type of knowledge that is useful for language learners and on the types of difficulties that the English language presents for them. It is anticipated that this knowledge helps teachers to teach and explain aspects of the English language to their students of English as a second language.
The lectures present content and a weekly tutorial gives students the opportunity to apply this knowledge in the analysis of features of the language. The work covered in tutorials prepares students for the type of knowledge and skills that they are required to demonstrate in course assessments. A course book guides students as they listen to lectures and orientates them to the content that is most relevant.
