Practical Language Teaching

Description

The course is developed mainly for pre-service English language teachers. The main aims of this course are:

  • to help student teachers to develop an understanding of the procedures, techniques and options used in teaching language lessons
  • to help student teachers to design and deliver effective language lessons for a variety of contexts or learner groups
  • to introduce student teachers to a variety of tools for teacher development such as peer teaching, peer observation and reflective teaching

The course challenges and stretches your imagination, encouraging you to explore and try out new ways of teaching language to maximise both teachers’ and students’ learning. This course is assessed using a series of activities and tasks related to practical language teaching. These activities can help you with your future career as a language teacher and cPastean be used as part of your teaching portfolio when applying for jobs.

Course teaching format

The course is taught through a combination of lectures, group discussions and group demonstrations in class. Students are also required to arrange meetings in small groups with the lecturer for assignments. Students are required to participate in all classes. Sessions 6, 7, 8 and 9 are compulsory.

Class limits information for 2017

Enrolment is limited to 33 students. Priority will be given to students who need the course to complete their degree, and then to others on a first in, first enrolled basis.
