Applied Linguistics Research

Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for LANGTCHG 732.

Description

This course provides an introduction to the basic ideas and concepts in the design of research in applied linguistics, including TESOL, and language teaching and learning. It is intended to help students prepare for their research and dissertation/thesis writing but it also introduces them to research in applied language studies in a more general sense, going beyond the particular type of study that they plan to undertake for their dissertation. The course is also open to non-dissertation students, who will benefit from a general overview of research approaches and issues in applied linguistics.

The course covers data collection and analysis methods associated with quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods research approaches, the writing of a proposal, ethical issues in research and managing the research process, as well as criteria for evaluating the quality of research. Primarily it aims to prepare students to write a dissertation or thesis, but it is also valuable as an elective for all students who wish to gain a broader understanding of research in the field.

By the end of the course, students are expected to:

  1. have a good understanding of the different types of research in applied language studies;
  2. be familiar with various aspects of the research process and research reporting;
  3. be able to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of particular research studies;
  4. be able to prepare a research proposal.
