Syntax

Description
What determines how words are put together in a particular order in a sentence? This course introduces the field of syntax: a scientific way of studying order and structure of words. Students will learn how to form syntactic argumentation, and evaluate different syntactic analyses. They will also learn about cross-linguistic variation and universals in the syntactic patterns found in natural languages.
No prior knowledge of any other language is assumed.
Course outcomes
A student who successfully completes this course should get an opportunity to:
- Acquire knowledge of syntax and apply it
- Understand and carry out a syntactic analysis
- Acquire skills in critical thinking, academic literacy, collection and presentation of linguistic data
