Media, Sound and Music

Description

This seminar course concentrates on approaches to sound and music in the disciplines of media and communication, popular music and sound studies. We focus on contemporary debates about audio and audiovisual media technologies. We address the political economy of music, the role of media technologies and platforms in listening practices and cultures, recorded voices and music, stardom and fandom, sound design and music in film and television, archives and material cultures, and the cultural politics of difference.

The seminar involves close reading of scholarship, reading responses, classroom exercises, discussions, presentations, and an independent research project on a topic of the student’s choice through various stages.
