Chinese Film Genres

Description

This course introduces students to some well-established genres in Chinese language film. The course aims to teach students to critically identify and examine how generic conventions and inventions interact to create aesthetic features and respond to situational changes. The course has a strong comparative perspective, covering three major cinema cultures in Chinese language film: Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China.

Through an interaction process that involves engagement with a number of feature films, required readings, lectures and discussions, students are expected to:

  • Become familiar with key genres in Chinese language film
  • Gain knowledge about key theories, concepts and analytical strategies in genre studies
  • Demonstrate familiarity with contemporary film studies and capacity to situate Chinese film studies in a transnational context
  • Hone critical thinking and writing skills
