MUSEUMS 700

Exhibiting Cultures: International

Please note: this is archived course information from 2017 for MUSEUMS 700.

Description

Drawing on the arguments of the "new museology", this course investigates the role of museums and art galleries in not only conserving cultural objects but presenting cultures and history through the medium of exhibitions. It considers the part these institutions play in identity formation and nationalism, and how curators have responded to these challenges. Fundamentally interdisciplinary, the course will consider the way different disciplines are presented in museums, notably history, ethnography and art. Case studies will be drawn from international practice as well as regional examples from New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific.
