Description

This is an interdisiciplinary course which will investigate the presentation of cultures in museums and art galleries and other sites globally, the strategies of public exhibitions and the role of curators and institutions in identity formation and nationalism. Students will examine current issues within the Museums and Cultural Heritage sector including collections, exhibition/display and public programmes, with a special interest in Māori and indigenous peoples. Students will gain a global overview of the field, examine relationships between stakeholders, develop an understanding of perspectives in museums and cultural heritage management, as well as an appreciation of audience diversity and digital technologies. Case studies will be drawn from international practice as well as regional examples from NZ, Australia and the Pacific.

To complete this course students must enrol in MUSEUMS 704 A and B, or MUSEUMS 704.
