POLITICS 700

Peace, Conflict and Terrorism

Please note: this is archived course information from 2018 for POLITICS 700.

Description

This course is an advanced study of violent conflict and terrorism. You will become familiar with the main explanations of political violence and the main policy approaches for resolving and preventing it.

This is a Comparative Politics course combining theoretical perspectives and empirical examples. In your essay you will carry out a systematic comparison of similar cases to test a particular theory or answer an important question in the discipline. By doing so, you each have the opportunity to add to the accumulation of knowledge in the field of conflict, terrorism and peace studies.

Each seminar has a list of "recommended" readings. As postgraduate students, it’s up to you how much reading you do, but clearly the more you do the more you will enjoy and gain from the class. Reading lists are provided for each week but there are many more articles and books relevant to each topic. Demonstrating that you have read widely in the theoretical and case study literature will gain you a higher mark for participation. I have also provided several readings specific to each conflict or country and a general bibliography.

Provisional class limits for 2018: Enrolment is limited to 80 students as follows:
