Beginners' Russian 2

Please note: this is archived course information from 2020 for RUSSIAN 101.

RUSSIAN 101 builds upon RUSSIAN 100. The course devotes attention to the essential grammar of Russian and to a range of language skills – reading, listening comprehension, speaking and writing. Students with prior knowledge comparable to that gained in RUSSIAN 100 may be admitted directly into RUSSIAN 101.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of RUSSIAN 101, a student:

  • Possesses “survival skills”—listening comprehension and speaking skills sufficient to talk about some every day topics in Russian
  • Knows the essential grammar and vocabulary of Russian: the declensions of nouns and their modifiers; forms and meanings of the six cases; verb conjugation–the forms of most types of verbs, their government and verbal aspect; a core vocabulary of approximately 2,000 words
  • Is able to read simple authentic texts without a dictionary and more advanced texts with the aid of a dictionary
  • Possesses the requisite foundation for further study of Russian

Important information

Students who study Russian for the first time at the University of Auckland must complete a Language Ability Declaration and will be selected on a first in first enrolled basis.

Richard Robin, Golosa ("Voices"): A Basic Course in Russian Book One, 5th ed.

RUSSIAN 101 covers Units 6–10 of this same textbook-workbook package used in RUSSIAN 100. Golosa strikes a good balance between a rigorous treatment of grammar and a communicative approach. Grammar is learned in the context of authentic contemporary conversational and written texts, and the course is supported with ample audio and video resources.
