TONGAN 201

Tongan Language 2

Description

If you are a student who already has some basic literacy skills in Tongan, this course will give you the chance to further your literacy skills, and to study topics in Tongan literature, structure and culture and history. Topics that we will cover include:  the origin of Tongan people and language according to oral traditions and according to scientific research; stratification of the Tongan language arising from stratification of the Tongan social hierarchy; selected vocabulary from the Tongan lexicon, including archaic and obsolete words, new words, and proverbs. You will also have the opportunity to improve your Tongan literacy skills in reading, writing, listening and library research. Most of the course will be taught using the Tongan language, and you will be given a course reader with material for regular use. We expect that you will already have passed Tongan Language 1 or have already acquired some fluency in the language.
