| The Dome III: Concrete (The Pantheon) | |
|
All the building methods described in the previous screens use stone as their building material. The Romans invented the use of concrete so that vaults and domes could be cast in a single fabric over wooden shuttering. The domed temple called the Pantheon, which was built in Rome in the 1st - 3rd centuries AD, is an example of this. Concrete domes were both stronger and less elaborate to build. However, the use of concrete was lost after the Roman period and stone was again used in Medieval times to build permanent church architecture. |
